In a historic vote, Italy's Democratic Party (PD) has elected Elly Schlein as its new secretary. Schlein, a 38-year-old former member of the European Parliament, becomes the first woman to lead the party.
Schlein's Victory
Schlein's victory is seen as a major upset, as she was not considered the favorite going into the race. She defeated front-runner Stefano Bonaccini by a comfortable margin, winning 53.8% of the vote to Bonaccini's 46.2%.
