Ben Wallace Resigns as Defence Secretary

Former Detroit Pistons Legend Departs Government Role

Four Years in the Job

Ben Wallace, the former NBA Defensive Player of the Year, has resigned as defence secretary following four years in the role. Wallace, who led the Detroit Pistons to an NBA championship in 2004, made the announcement ahead of an expected cabinet reshuffle from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Wallace's departure marks the end of a remarkable journey for the former basketball star. After retiring from the NBA in 2012, he entered politics and was elected as a Conservative MP in 2015. He was appointed defence secretary in 2019 by then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

During his time as defence secretary, Wallace oversaw a period of increased defence spending and intensified tensions with Russia. He was a vocal critic of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and played a key role in coordinating the UK's response to the conflict.

Wallace's resignation comes amidst a wider reshuffle of the cabinet by Prime Minister Sunak. Sunak is expected to make a number of changes to his top team, including appointing a new defence secretary.
